Spring Meeting 1997

Spring Meeting of the Indiana Section of AAPT

Saturday, April 12, 1997

Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN

8:00 REGISTRATION: Physics Building, 2nd floor

8:30 -- Room 223 -- Physics in Slow Motion, Hasan Fakhruddin, David Doiron, & Don Hey, Indiana Academy for Sciences, Mathematics, and Humanities.

A number of physics demonstrations involve processes that happen so rapidly that audiences find it difficult to observe and appreciate them. Using video tape and slow motion replay, with freezing a particular frame, makes observations easier. We will present videos of recorded demonstrations that we have carried out in our classes and replayed in slow motion.

9:15 -- Room 223 -- Teacher of the Year Presentation -- Jeff Sayers , Brazil

9:30 BREAK

11:00 BREAK

11:15 -- Room 223 -- Business Meeting

12:00 Luncheon at Seattle Beanery

Speaker: Dr. David J. Smith, University of the Virgin Islands.

Topic: Mocko Jumbie Physics

Mocko jumbies are stiltwalkers who represent good spirits. David has been a mocko jumbie since 1987. He will present several examples of static and dynamical studies of stiltwalking that he uses when teaching mechanics at UVI. In addition, he will describe a recent project incorporating multi-media to analyze jumbie video I clips and present jumbie puzzles from the WebPhysics project at IUPUI.
