    Meeting Report:

Nine officers and executive committee members were present to discuss their duties and plans for the 2007 meetings.  Duane Nickel, president, reported on the display table requested for the INAAPT during the HASTI convention in February.  Mike Wolter, section rep, described the research project on the Indiana High School Physics Classroom Assessment test in which members of the INAAPT have been participating.  It was decided to design and make available to Indiana high school physics teachers certificates of recognition for successful scores on the Indiana Physics Classroom Assessment.  Mike Moloney, spring meeting host, reported on available dates at Rose-Hulman for the annual spring meeting.   It was decided to hold the annual INAAPT Spring meeting on Friday evening and Saturday, April 20-21, 2007.  It was also decided to request on the Call for Papers for the INAAPT spring meeting that presenters provide an electronic copy of their complete presentation in addition to their abstract.   The complete presentations submitted will be made available on a CD of the spring meeting.  Luci Rusu, past president, hosted the meeting and provided an excellent selection of nutritional support items for the committee.

April 28-29, 2006 (Friday evening and Saturday)
INAAPT Annual Spring Meeting
Purdue University, Department of Physics
West Lafayette, Indiana
Host:  Julie Conlon, jaconlon@physics.purdue.edu

The annual meeting of the Indiana Section of the AAPT (INAAPT) began with more than a bang on Friday evening April 28th.  Roger Boyce provided for inspection a number of affordable demos that he has used with the Traveling Physics Funfest.  Roger has worked for 37 years at Purdue University with physics lab and physics lecture room equipment.   He has been manager of Purdue’s lecture rooms and has been taking Physics on the Road to K-12 students and teachers for 14 years.  INAAPT members present were provided with an opportunity to work with many of Roger’s demonstrations.
On Saturday April 29th forty three members of the INAAPT were afforded the opportunity to select from three parallel strands of physics research papers and presentations following the welcome and opening remarks “Rising to the Challenge” from Andrew Hirsch, Head of the Department of Physics at Purdue.  Special recognition was merited for Bill Coombs brave high school students who walked into a room full of physics teachers to present the results of their research projects.  An excellent luncheon was provided and Mark Haugan described curriculum changes at Purdue in the introductory physics course “Matter & Interactions: University Physics Reform and What It Can Mean for School Science.”
Following lunch the INAAPT annual business meeting was conducted.  Rob Spencer, was elected to serve as section vice president for the coming year and Mike Wolter was elected section rep.  The INAAPT has sponsored awards each year for physics projects submitted by students at the Hoosier Science and Engineering Fair (state science fair).  Esther Uduehl from F.J. Reitz High School in Evansville, Alex Hagen from Jefferson High School in Lafayette, and Mary-Jeanette Andrews from Northside Middle School in Columbus were recipients of the INAAPT awards.  The annual Indiana High School Physics Teacher of the Year was presented to Miles Dunston from Merrillville High School.  A Distinguished Service Award was presented to Jim Vermillion, former section rep, officer, and long time supporter of the INAAPT.  Mike Moloney’s offer to host the Spring 2007 meeting at Rose-Hulman was approved with specific dates to be determined at the fall INAAPT Executive Committee meeting.
The meeting ended with thanks to Julie Conlon, host; thanks to the students and members of the Purdue University Physics Department; and thanks to Purdue Physics Alumni Dr. David Mortara and Dr. John Parker who helped by sponsoring the annual meeting.
Yours in physics,
Mike Wolter, INAAPT section rep.
